Sex Education Season 3 Recap: What Happened

Sex Education, the critically acclaimed Netflix comedy-drama series, returned for a third season in September 2021. The show follows the lives of the students and staff of Moordale Secondary School as they navigate the ups and downs of teenage sexuality and relationships.

Recap of Season 3

Season 3 picks up where Season 2 left off, with Otis and Maeve having finally confessed their feelings for each other. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Maeve is now dating Isaac, and Otis is dating Ruby.

Meanwhile, the new headmistress, Hope Haddon, has arrived at Moordale Secondary School and is determined to make the school more “prestigious.” She implements a number of changes, including a strict dress code and a ban on extracurricular activities.

The students of Moordale are not happy with the changes, and they rebel in various ways. Otis and Maeve decide to reopen their sex therapy clinic, and they are joined by a new student, Cal. Cal is a non-binary student who is struggling with their sexuality, and they find support from Otis and Maeve.

Other notable storylines in Season 3 include:

  • Aimee continues to deal with the trauma of her sexual assault in Season 2. She breaks up with Steve, her boyfriend, because she is not ready for physical intimacy.
  • Eric and Adam start dating, but their relationship is complicated by Adam’s internalized homophobia.

  • Maeve is offered a scholarship to attend an elite boarding school in the United States.

In the Season 3 finale, Otis and Maeve finally get together, but their relationship is short-lived as Maeve leaves for the United States. Jean gives birth to a baby girl, who she names Joy. Aimee finds closure from her sexual assault experience. Eric and Adam break up, but they remain friends.

What to Expect in Season 4

Season 4 of Sex Education is currently in production, and is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2023. There is no confirmation on what the plot of Season 4 will be, but we can expect to see the students of Moordale Secondary School continue to navigate the challenges of teenage sexuality and relationships.
